st jerome's laneway festival 2012

These are a few shots from Laneway Festival on Saturday. Because of the rain, all the stages were moved undercover. This was a blessing (we didn't get wet) and a curse (harder to get good photos). Due to it being such a good lineup, there were bound to be more than a few timetable clashes. I ended up seeing Yuck, Austra, Active Child, Cults, Feist, the end of Toro Y Moi, The Drums, and M83. Unfortunately I missed out on Girls, The Horrors, Washed Out, and SBTRKT. However, it turned out that I could have seen Washed Out since M83 started their set 45 minutes late due to 'technical difficulties'. They then had to finish their set early to appease council noise restrictions. Despite the less than ideal circumstances, M83 still managed to put on a solid performance. It was, however, such a disappointing end to what would have otherwise been a pretty epic day.

Hey, Current/Elliott models, what gives? Why do you look so bored? I mean you're all wearing what I think are pretty fantastic outfits, you seem to be hanging out of your own accord, and you all have awesome hair. One of you is even wearing bunny ears for goodness sake! If I was wearing those clothes in my free time and hanging out with my besties in a grand old house I'd be way more excited. I know its probably all the doing of the creative team, but really? Other than that, I'm loving the styling for Current/Elliott's spring 2012 campaign.

Haven't done one of these in a while. Had a bit of a 'shop your wardrobe' moment the other day and came up with this combination. I'd almost forgotten that I owned these shoes, and I've hardly touched this bag since I bought it six months ago. I really should use it more often. As you can see, light pinks and yellows are still my preferred summer colour palette. Pastels for life.

festival edit: big day out

In a similar vein to my Laneway Festival edit, I thought I'd also do one for the Big Day Out festival since it's about to hit our shores. While I'm not going to BDO this year*, these are my picks of festival-friendly attire (as opposed to the ASOS edit - high heels, really?) I'm basing my edit around the Gold Coast event which can be quite exhausting what with typically high summer temperatures, limited shade, and massive crowds. Cool and comfortable outfits are a must. For those not acquainted with the Gold Coast BDO experience, the festival fashion regularly consists of too-orange fake tans, tiny denim shorts, and bikini tops (blergh). I think these items capture the fun festival vibe and still manage to be very 'GC' without being too trashy.

Best way to decorate a room, ever? Close to it, I think. I've been in a bit of a redecorating mood lately, and these tassel garlands would be a fun way to brighten up a space. I first spotted these over on Style Milk's Instagram feed, and a quick internet search led me to the goods. You can purchase one of these garlands from the Confetti System shop, or DIY one using this tutorial from the Green Wedding Shoes website. Yay for colourful shiny things!

The latest Ruby lookbook has dropped, and I can definitely say that I am a fan. This collection is a little bit more 'kick ass' than usual, with metallic bustiers and pants (yes please!) thrown into the usually saccharine sweet mix. These are my favourite looks from the collection - a combination of casually tailored pieces that can easily be dressed up or down. I was browsing the ASOS website and noticed that the Australian site had a special summer festival edit. This got me a bit excited, but when I went to have a look at their picks I found it all a bit lacking. I'm going to Laneway Festival in a few weeks, and their Laneway edit didn't really seem very 'Laneway' to me. It probably also doesn't help that their picks were more winter weather appropriate, and right now in Brisbane we're experiencing some sweltering summer days. So I thought I'd put together my own list of more appropriate Laneway-inspired gear from the site. Which festivals, if any, are you going to this summer?

l'eau de chloé: film stills

The Chloé eau de parfum has to be one of my favourite fragrances, so imagine my excitement when I spotted this campaign for their new L’eau de Chloé fragrance. These are just a few stills from the inspiration film for the campaign, directed by Mario Sorrenti. Can you say sun-drenched summer daydream? While whimsical images of girls frolicking in fields is nothing new, it's a steadfast favourite and a firm seller. I also like the accompanying track to the teaser film which is a Lissy Trullie cover of Hot Chip's 'Ready For The Floor'. I haven't even tried this fragrance out yet but the campaign has already won me over. L’eau de Chloé: 1, Soph: 0.

diy: gem embellished shirt

Inspired by the Dolce & Gabbana spring 2012 collection, I decided to DIY my own gem-embellished creation. Unable to find a suitable lacey number to embellish, I settled on a plain white t-shirt instead ($5 from Best & Less). This is a fairly quick and simple DIY. All you need is a top, some fancy looking gems, and craft glue. I still have heaps of gems left over so will be keeping my eye out for more things to embellish. More photos and instructions after the jump.

Bits and pieces. Make sure that the glue is suitable for fabric. The one I picked up is specifically for sticking gems onto things (woo hoo!) and is washable, which is what you want when gluing things to fabric.

Before you glue anything on, lay out the pattern. I stuck to a simple radiating pattern around the neckline.

After you've decided on a pattern, it's time to start gluing. Just dot on a bit of glue to the backs of the gems and start applying. My tip is to stick to bigger sized gems as the smaller ones can get a bit fiddly.

Also, if you are thinking of creating a really large, intricate pattern, stick to stiffer fabrics. Stretchy fabrics (like cotton t-shirts) may cause the glue to expand and gems to fall off. That's partly why I stuck to such a small area on this t-shirt.

My magpie tendencies have inevitably drawn me to these garments from Dolce & Gabbana's spring 2012 collection. Could they be trying to bring back the bedazzler? If so, they're definitely going the right way about it. I haven't done a decent DIY in ages (the glitter shoe craze just floated past me), but I am seriously tempted to give this a go. Check list: a shirt/dress/skirt (lace optional), lots of baubles, and a hell of a lot of patience! Although for those lacking patience, like myself, it might be wise to start with something simple like a bejewelled collar.

we miss you magic land!

Last post of the year! And a very bright and cheerful one at that. Yesterday a few of my friends and I headed to the Gallery of Modern Art to check out some of their latest exhibits. These snaps were taken in the 'we miss you magic land!' exhibit by Pip & Pop - a magical world of sugary sweet delights and kaleidoscopic colours. This exhibition is actually in the kid's section but it can definitely be enjoyed by all ages. My inner five year old was going nuts. We also visited the Yayoi Kusama exhibition (once again, brilliantly colourful!) and made a note to come back to see the Matisse exhibition in the new year. Speaking of which, wishing everyone a safe and happy New Year. Thanks for taking the time to visit the blog in 2011 and see you all in 2012!

A while ago I featured a few pieces of jewellery designed by Michelle Oh. Well, after reading my post she was lovely enough to send me one of her rings to call my own. It came in the mail the yesterday, and I have been wearing it non-stop. I love the delicate, understated design and the 'encrusted' detailing. It's definitely on its way to becoming one of my everyday pieces of jewellery. Also, because I am a packaging nerd, I have to say that the box she sent it in was pretty darn special too. vegan gingerbread cookies

While I am neither a vegan nor vegetarian, my friend Tara recently challenged me to try my hand at some vegan-friendly baking recipes. Baking? Without eggs? Or butter? Quelle horreur! But because I am a competitive little titch, I took up her challenge. I decided to go a bit festive and try making some vegan gingerbread cookies. I had some left over gluten-free flour in the pantry, so they are (for the most part I hope) gluten-free as well. Recipe after the jump.

The recipe I used was based on one I found at Post Punk Kitchen.

Ingredients

1/3 cup vegetable oil

3/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup treacle

1/4 cup soy milk

2 cups flour*

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon all spice

1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger

Method

1. Whisk oil and sugar until combined. Add treacle and soy milk and stir.

2. Sift in half the dry ingredients. Stir. Add the remaining dry ingredients and mix until you achieve a dough-like texture.

3. Flatten the dough into a disc and wrap in cling wrap. Refrigerate for about an hour.

4. Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius. Prepare some baking trays.

5. Prepare a floured surface. Roll out the dough to about half a centimetre thickness.

6. Cut out desired cookie shapes. Bake for about 8 minutes.

7. Remove cookies and let them cool.

Once cool you can decorate them and what not. I didn't because I got lazy.

*Because I used gluten-free flour, the two cups weren't enough to achieve a consistent dough-like texture. Mine was initially quite sloppy. To overcome this I kept sifting in flour and mixing until I achieved the doughy texture I was after. Remembering to add in pinches of baking powder as I went along. In the future, if I was using gluten-free flour, I'd probably reduce the amount of vegetable oil and/or soy milk.

I've been mulling over my short list (which initially consisted of thirty-eight songs) since Wednesday. I really need to just pick ten songs to vote for, because it's unnecessarily doing my head in. One song that will definitely be making an appearance on my list is 'Ffunny Ffrends' by Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Not only is it a blissed out tune, but the film clip is also pretty sweet (anything with a disco ball is an instant hit in my books). What were your top songs of 2011?

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of attending the Beginning Boutique x Brisbane Bloggers meet up. From Liss of Daydream Lily to Francesca of Opinion Slave, it was the perfect opportunity to meet all those internet friends in real life. It was also so nice to finally be able to put faces to (blog) names - like Kit of That Unreliable Girl! What's more, once we were there Kate and Sarah from Beginning Boutique spoiled us all with pretty Karen Walker gifts. I took my Canon Sureshot along for the night, with the hope of finishing off the rest of my film, but those photos were more miss than hit (note to self: pay attention to camera settings). Luckily though, being a blogger meet, there were plenty of other cameras to document the night. You can see photos from the night over at the following blogs:

I finally got my Harvest Festival film developed this weekend. I've been really slack on the film photography front lately. I still have two rolls of unfinished film to get through, one of which dates back to the beginning of the year and the other which I had with me in Europe. I'm kind of afraid the latter might have been affected by too many airport x-rays. Lately I've been drawn to jewellery that has a more earthen feel to it. Sculptured pieces that have an organic looking form, and that have a slightly battered beauty to them. After having a bit of a browse through the Boticca website, I found a few pieces that fit this aesthetic (pictured above). These were the ones caught my eye and had me going back for second and third glances. The rings by Michelle Oh are inspired by natural forms such as coral, twigs, and petals while the pieces by Cynthia Jones have a certain worn beauty to them. harvest festival: the flaming lips

My iPhone is my default camera these days. These were taken during The Flaming Lips' set at Harvest Festival on Saturday. I also took a film camera along for the day, but haven't finished the roll yet. After not being able to see The Flaming Lips at Splendour in the Grass a few years back, they were my must-see* set on Saturday. Hands down, it was one of the best live performances I have ever been a part of. Confetti cannons, balloons, strobe lights, Wayne Coyne in a giant bubble, and sing-a-longs en masse. If you want to experience the definition of happiness, go to a Flaming Lips' gig.

*Of course, TV on the Radio, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The National, and Portishead were pretty magnificent as well.

I haven't posted any editorials in a while, mainly because they all seem to be getting a bit formulaic these days. However, when I saw these photos of Kim Noorda in issue #53 of TANK Magazine, I knew I just had to share. One date I always look forward to on the calendar is the Finders Keepers markets. With so many great stalls in the one place, it's hard to narrow down what to actually buy. After doing a few rounds of the markets and finally making a few purchases (stay tuned to see what I picked up!), my friends and I headed to the lawn outside for some lunch, live music, and chats. It was such a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon and we even managed to score a shady spot under a big umbrella. It'll be a fair while until these markets roll into Brisbane again but if you're in Sydney, make sure to pay a visit when they hit in December.

diy: floral appliqué tote

Cut, spray, stick. That's all you need to do for this DIY. I scored this tote at a travel expo but it had a logo on the front which I desperately wanted to cover up. This tote was also originally a cream colour but I dyed it black prior to this DIY. The spray adhesive seems to be holding up fairly well, but we'll see how durable it actually is as time goes by. I left the edges on my appliqué raw buy you can always neaten it up by sewing around the edges. This is a simple and effective way to update a plain old tote bag.

I went to visit my gran the other day. Two things I love about my gran's place: the garden and the bookshelves. These are just a few snaps I took on le trusty iPhone. Check out the date on the Art Journal. Ancient! The set of Charles Dickens novels used to belong to my great-grandma, which she received when she was a child. They're about 100 years old too. The books are a history lesson in themselves. The garden is overgrown and full of nooks and crannies. Just the way I like it.

Inspired by Anna from Much Love's Frocktober effort, I decided I'd dedicate this post to one of my new favourite frocks. She invited me to take part in her 'Friends For Frocktober' post, but because I hadn't checked my emails in a few days I was a bit late on the boat. Anyway, I started making this dress a few months ago using a pattern I found in my mum's stash of sewing supplies. Despite following the instructions, the end result was not as anticipated and I've only just finished tweaking the design, with the help of my mum who has all the super-duper dress fixing skills. I would now happily wear this dress every day for a whole month (laundry issues aside). Two types of stripes in the one shirt? Could this possibly be the Ultimate Striped Shirt? It's no secret that I love a good stripe and lately I've been loving my Antipodium X Sportsgirl shirt sick. It's going to be getting a workout come summer, trust me. I'm not usually one for cropped shirts but I've taken to wearing it with high waisted skirts and jeans - no bared stomachs around these joints. I also like the longer length hem at the back. Funnily enough, I also have a Secret Squirrel long sleeved striped shirt with a similar hemline. Not only is my collection of striped shirts growing, but it also seems that I'm building a collection of split-hem shirts as well.

new/old cosina camera

I don't think I've shared the latest addition to my analogue camera family on the blog yet. It was actually a little something from my dad. While I was in Prague, he sent me a text (which I received at 5am, no less) saying he'd found and bought me an SLR camera and lens. Totally unexpected but greatly appreciated. While I was initially excited, I then realised I had to wait over two weeks before it was in my hands. Patience is not my strong point. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet as I've still got to get through unfinished films on my Holga and Diana Mini. I'm unfamiliar with this make of camera, so if anyone has had experience with one I'd love to hear your reviews.

Some dreamy imagery from Ra Ra Superstar's spring/summer lookbook. Ra Ra Superstar is a Brisbane store that stocks a range of vintage and vintage-inspired clothing. Their spring/summer collection, called 'A Weekend by the Sea', is awash with vibrant floral patterns, nautical stripes, and bold block colours. Ra Ra Superstar is tucked away behind the Turkish Restaurant on Given Terrace, but with a bright pink laneway leading you to the store you won't have much trouble finding it. It's probably one of my favourite stores in Brisbane. Every time I have brunch nearby, I make sure to pop in - my first ever visit lead to me finding the perfect tan Peter Pan collar blouse. These are just a few photos that didn't really fit into any other posts. This will probably be the last of the travel posts - or until I get my last roll of Diana film developed, anyway. After Berlin it was back to London for a few more days before heading home. The extra time in London was spent catching a few more sights that I missed the first time round as well as doubling up on old favourites such as the Camden Markets and the V&A Museum. Although, when I got back home I realised I had missed something monumental (to me, anyway), and that was a trip to Liberty! Cue facepalm. The first photo is actually of a little courtyard in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Isn't it adorable? I want to call it home!

While the colour combination of red and camel was popular during autumn and winter, cool creams and corals are where it's at this summer. In the same vein as its wintry predecessor, the colour combination of cream and coral is all about providing a vivid contrast. This time, however, it's a whole lot fresher and much more suited to the summer months. I'll be looking to team my cream/nude/beige clothes with pops of coral goodness. These are just a few items I've picked out to whet your fashion appetites.

After a short stay in Prague, it was off to Berlin where I had planned to stay with a friend. After a bit of miscommunication, phones running out of credit, and a rude introduction to the U-Bahn - we met at what I later learnt was one of the more notoriously dangerous stations - we made it back to her apartment in one piece. Unfortunately she was leaving for the weekend and wouldn't be able to guide us around Berlin, but she left a more than comprehensive insider's guide to the city (read: a jam-packed A4 piece of paper covered in barely legible notes). So when I wasn't off visiting famous monuments such as the East Side Gallery, Brandenburg Gate, and the Reichstag; I was living like a local in Neukölln. Unfortunately I didn't get many photos of the 'local' stuff because I felt like a bit of a dork whipping out my camera while everyone was going about their day-to-day business. There were a lot of missed photo opportunities but I'm not too fussed - you can't capture every moment. Below are a few places to check out if you're ever in Berlin. These were the ones I actually remembered. There were a lot of other places that I forgot to take note of. Like the slightly derelict garden that was home to a double decker bus and cafe. Or the bar I went to on a Monday night with the cool decor and cheap beers. Travelling fail, I know.

- Noewkolln Flea Markets which are on the third Sunday of each month. We timed that one pretty well. If I actually had room in my backpack I would have gone crazy buying stuff.
- Hamy Cafe for amazing and cheap Vietnamese food and fresh fruit smoothies. The daily offers are always under 5€ and they are big serves too.
- White Trash Fast Food for finger licking good (and slightly greasy) food. They also make a mean vodka and freshly squeezed lemonade. And vodka and freshly squeezed orange juice. And really strong Old Fashioneds. They even played Edward Scissor Hands on the TV at the bar! I really liked this place, in case you couldn't already tell.
- Cinema Cafe and the adjacent alleyway (Rosenthaler Straße 39). Make sure to follow the alleyway to the very end and go up the graffiti'd staircase where you'll find a cool bookshop. Very underground. Very Berlin. Although much to the chagrin of my friend, who is a Berlin local, even this is now apparently too touristy. I found that comment a bit ironic considering the circumstances. The shopping in this district is pretty good too.

I seriously could have spent weeks and weeks exploring Berlin. What was initially going to be a three night stay ended up lasting nearly a week. That's how much I loved this place!

After Paris, our trio dwindled down to a duo. My friend Rach and I were basically winging our way through the next week and a half in Europe. With many rough itineraries in mind, we decided on Prague being the next point of call. We only stayed for two nights but it was still enough time to enjoy this picturesque town. This is also the point where I became slightly camera fatigued - as such, there's only going to be one post about Prague. Like many European cities, the city centre is split into an Old and New Town. The Old Town is full of wonderful old buildings and monuments such as the Astronomical Clock Tower (insert joke here about it being one of the most overrated attractions in Europe), Tyn Church, and the Charles Bridge. The old town is also full of winding alleyways just waiting to be explored. The larger-than-life pistols were one such discovery. They were part of a young artist exhibition which I thought typified the juxtaposition of old and new in Prague. You might be wondering why I chose to include a photo of a sandwich but that meal saved my life. Orange juice and a toasted sandwich - my kind of comfort food. Prague was the perfect place to relax and unwind after the previously jam-packed weeks of travelling. Next up? Berlin!

Viparo Clothing were kind enough to send me this leather skirt to style. I'd been on the look out for a leather skirt for a while, but with spring arriving I decided to put it into the 'next autumn/winter' basket. However, this skirt is just too good to put away. I can imagine it quickly becoming one of my favourite 'going out' skirts. Even though I plan on wearing pastels and brights to death this spring, I'm not a fan of teaming those colours with black. So when styling this skirt for unseasonably warm weather, I stuck to a trusty neutral colour palette. This was yesterday. Today is cold and rainy. If I was wearing this skirt today I'd be all about the warm knits, stockings, and boots.

A Sunday afternoon stroll through a cemetery? It might seem a bit morbid to some, but when you're in Paris and it's one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world, why not? Especially since it was just down the road from where we were staying. Père Lachaise Cemetery is the resting place to more famous and influential people than you can poke a stick at (but please don't poke sticks at them because they're dead and that's disrespectful and if zombies really do exist then your brains will be the first thing on the menu). The most notable residents at this cemetery include Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, and Jim Morrison. Oscar Wilde's tomb was relatively easy to find, but Jimbo's proved to be a bit harder (we were navigating sans map and with a less than photographic memory of the bulletin board). In the end we had to stalk some old guy wearing a Doors t-shirt. Other people had the same idea - I wouldn't be surprised if this guy basically spent his weekends leading stray visitors to Jim Morrison's grave. I wouldn't classify this as a 'must see' attraction, but it's an interesting outing nonetheless.

While the Louvre hosts a great number of artworks, my favourite part of the museum would have to be the Napoleon III Apartments. Lots of chandeliers and shiny things - I was in my element! While I was left feeling underwhelmed by the Mona Lisa, the Apartments blew me away. Talk about decadent. The girls I was in Paris with missed this part of the Louvre on their visit. DO NOT REPEAT THEIR MISTAKE.

After I visited the Eiffel Tower, I proceeded with my 'tourist day' and visited a few more famous Paris sights - namely the Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Élysées, Notre Dame, and the Louvre. I even managed to lose my bearings in the 5th and 6th arrondissements and stumble upon the Luxembourg Palace and Gardens. Is it still getting lost if you end up finding more interesting stuff along the way? I swear that walking around the sidestreets is an exercise in sightseeing itself. Thank goodness for extended daylight hours - I don't know how I would have crammed it all in otherwise! On a side note, while I was wandering around the city that day people kept stopping me and asking for directions. Even a businesswoman who spoke fluent French - and then turned out to be Australian! Was it the striped shirt? Or maybe I just looked like I knew where I was going (hahahaha). Either way, it was fun to think that even on my most touristy day I could have passed for a local.

I don't think I could ever get sick of looking at the Eiffel Tower. Every time it came in view, I just couldn't help but take a moment to stop and stare at it. As my other two friends had previously been to Paris before I met up with them, I set out for the day to tackle a few of the major attractions by myself. First up was the Eiffel Tower. I queued like the patient tourist that I am and after about an hour-ish of queuing - I can't quite remember, I zone out in queues and subsequently lose track of time - proceeded to climb up to the second level. Yes, I took the stairs. If there's one thing I took away from this trip, it was learning to love stairs. I decided against going right to the very top, partly due to the fact that you had to once again queue for the lift. By this time I was well and truly sick of queues and crowds. Extreme winds and a slight fear of heights may have also been contributing factors. It was quite blustery and overcast when I climbed the Eiffel Tower, but the views over Paris were awe inspiring nonetheless. Of course, by the time I made it back to ground level, the clouds had parted and there were blue skies all round. Go figure.

I always thought I preferred a minimalist aesthetic when it came to design interiors. That was before I visited the Palace of Versailles. Now I'm all about chandeliers and excess. You should see how many photos I took of chandeliers. It was bordering on obsessive. Those French monarchs really knew a thing or two about grandeur. Other than that, there's not much I can say to adequately describe Versailles. The place is massive. You really just have to see it for yourself.

Remember the Thrift Exchange? Don't worry, it's not finished, we've just been on hiatus for a bit. Well, I have anyway, Jaharn posted her outfit a while ago. Our last theme was ' pleats' and I received this in the post just before I went overseas. It was quite well timed actually, as only a few weeks earlier I had lamented the death of my other black pleated skirt. Anyway, since getting back, I seem to have lost my pleated/midi skirt mojo. I know, I couldn't believe it either. You'd think styling a black pleated skirt would be simple, but I was having some difficulties. So I decided to focus on colour instead. I'm loving deep reds and tans, and I think this colour combination is perfect for autumn/winter. While usually I'd wear this outfit with ballet flats, I think that a pair of lace up boots is an ideal way to tone down the librarian-ness of it all.

Also, in case you missed it (I know I nearly did), while I was away we launched the Thrift Exchange website. What this means is that now everyone can take part in the fun! While Jaharn and I have only two challenges left to go before we finish, we've passed the baton on to Brooke from re:new Vintage and Robyn from Twitch Vintage. Our first order of business in Paris - Disneyland! I never got to go to Disneyland as a child so as a twentysomething adult I decided it was high time I experience a slice of that Disney magic, Euro-style! I'm not going to lie, it was possibly the happiest day of my life. I even conquered my fear of rollercoasters thanks to a certain Space Mountain (note: a 360 degree inversion is as crazy as it sounds). I took 175 photos that day. These are just a few shots in and around the apartment I stayed in while in Paris. After spending two weeks in London, it was time to jump on the Eurostar and head to the City of Lights. There I'd meet up with two of my friends for a girls' week in Paris. Prior to leaving Australia, we booked an apartment through airbnb.com. The premise is quite simple - you stay at someone's apartment while they are elsewhere. I think when you undertake this type of accommodation arrangement (as with couchsurfing etc.) the general rule of 'don't be a douchebag' applies to all parties involved. We were really lucky in that we scored an awesome apartment, in a central part of Paris (Bastille), at a very reasonable cost. We also had the loveliest host who met us at the metro station, helped us with our bags, gave us a general rundown of the area, and even offered us a few beers. After he left us to our own devices, we quickly made ourselves feel at home. Our neighbourhood was quite lively, with plenty of bars and restaurants, and we were in walking distance to so many things. I rather enjoyed the experience of staying in an apartment as opposed to a hostel or hotel. It felt like I really lived in Paris. Which of course made saying goodbye at the end of the week all the more difficult. But never fear, you don't have to say goodbye just yet because I have plenty of Paris posts lined up. Next up? EuroDisney!

While I hadn't been greeted with the most summery weather upon my arrival in London, when the sun did come out I grabbed it with both hands and held on for dear life. On one such day, a group of us made the short train trip to Brighton. The day was, in one word, delightful. Our first stop was the pier which proved to be quite entertaining. And yes, I did ride the carousel. Best £2 I'd spent yet! The remainder of the day was spent laying about on the beach. The very pebbly beach. One thing's for sure - I prefer my beaches white and sandy, thanks. While I didn't brave the water (reports from those who did verified my fears that it was indeed, very cold) I did enjoy lazing about on the beach chairs and soaking up the sunshine. Only a short drive out of London, Bath is a must-see city. I visited Bath as part of a day tour that also covered Windsor Castle and Stonehenge. As it was our last stop of the day, and we were running behind schedule, I was only able to spend one and a half hours there. Which was nowhere near enough time to take in all that this city has to offer. In my short visit, I stayed close to the central tourist hub and visited the Roman Baths and surrounds. I would have loved to have been able to spend a full day (or two or three) exploring the city. I could have quite happily whiled away a few hours meandering through the streets and admiring the Georgian architecture. Bath is also home to the Jane Austen Centre, which I unfortunately didn't get to visit despite our tour guide promising us to do so. In my short time there I also managed to satisfy my sweet tooth by picking up a few chocolates from the chocolate shop next to the Abbey (you must!) and then stuffing my face with choc mint ice cream. Which explains the last photo. Yum!

The main reason I went overseas in the first place was to attend the Glastonbury Festival. By that, I mean that I purchased my festival ticket first and then thought 'well, it looks like I'm heading overseas, I guess I better book some flights'. There are really no words to effectively describe this event. It is just massive. For those who have experienced Splendour in the Grass at home, Glastonbury is Splendour on steroids. Lots of steroids. We camped from the Wednesday and had two days to just take in the enormity of the festival, before the music had even started. There is so much to see and do, you could easily spend five days just exploring the grounds and not seeing any music at all. We were still discovering new parts of the festival on the last day!

One of the most eventful things that happened to me was on the first night when I lost my bag - or it got stolen, we still haven't figured that one out - with my money, camera, and phone in it. It's possibly the worst thing that could have happened. And we had no idea how it happened either. My bag was definitely in my tent as I went to sleep that night (there were eye witnesses). After turning the tent inside out on Thursday morning, we asked the campsite marshals for assistance and they informed us that there had been a thief in our area that night. The thought that it had been stolen was sickening, especially if the theft occurred while I was sleeping in my own tent. I spent the morning filing police reports (if only for insurance purposes), cancelling my cards, and visiting lost property. And the most amazing thing happened when I visited lost property - I got my bag back. My money wasn't in there - and I wasn't expecting it to be - but I was glad to have the rest back at least. As we were leaving, however, the dude at lost property came running after us and said that they did in fact have my money. It had just been removed and stored in a safe. Cue jaws dropping. I had over £100 in there. So it wasn't technically a theft as nothing was stolen, but somehow my bag had been removed from my tent and ended up on the other side of the festival. And then handed into lost property. A Glastonbury miracle? I think so.

Anyway, now that I have that crazy anecdote out of the way, I'll get back to the actual festival. Highlights from the festival included Beyonce's headlining performance, Radiohead and Pulp as surprise guests, finally getting to meet Jaharn in person (blogger meet at Glasto - doing it in style!), and exploring the Green Fields. I'm sure there are plenty more memorable moments but the whole event was one giant blur of good times. And mud. Don't even get me started on the mud. By the end of the festival I was wrecked, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. It's definitely something that I'm glad to have experienced. sportsgirls like: antipodium

If you've been following my blog for a while, you may notice that I'm quite a fan of the Australian, London-based label Antipodium. And what Australian girl grows up without being a bit partial to the one-stop-fix-for-everything-fashion store that is Sportsgirl? So imagine my glee when I found out that the latest 'Sportsgirls Like' collaboration would involve none other than, you guessed it, Antipodium. Sportsgirl have been quite notorious for pulling in recognised designers for these collaborations. They even managed to get revered blogger Susie Bubble to blog on the set of the shoot. The 'Sportsgirls Like: Antipodium' collection is entitled Field Day after the music festival that takes place in London. As such, the designs are quite festival-inspired. The capsule collection is dominated by muted hues that are reminiscent of the London climate. It also features Antipodium's signature quirky yet feminine designs and eye-catching prints to boot. The paisley printed dress, maroon hooded jacket, and striped shirt are my picks so far. The collection will be available in-store and online from September. In the meantime you can check out the full lookbook on the Sportsgirl website.

A must-do when you're in London is a trip to Camden Markets. If not for the markets, then for the food (so much food! If only I had three stomachs). The first time I went (yes, I went more than once) was on a weekday, so it was relatively quiet. 'Relatively' being the key word. Much like the rest of London, even on a weekday it was still quite busy. While most of the outside markets can get a bit samey, the markets in the Horse Stables were much more to my liking - especially for op-shop and vintage type fare. The second time I went was on a Saturday and it was much busier - more people, more hawking, more pushing and shoving. The upside was that the Electric Ballroom was open and had market stalls inside (even though they were pretty average). While I didn't get to go to a gig there, at least I could say that I had been inside it. On a slightly sombre note, the second time I visited the markets also happened to be on the same fateful day that Amy Winehouse was found dead at her Camden Square home. Creepy. Anyway, I must write a disclaimer that most of my travel posts won't be featuring much fashion as such - no photos of me looking whimsical along the Thames or the Champs Elysees, sorry. My travel wardrobe consisted mostly of jeans and tees and whatever was clean on the day. I didn't even pack any pleated or midi length skirts. I know, I couldn't believe it either.

When I booked my flight to London I had no idea that I'd be coming at such an opportune time. The Monday after I arrived was the first day of Wimbledon. My friend Bron lives only a short walk away from the tennis courts so it was definitely on our to-do list. We started queueing at about 8.30am and managed to get into the courts by 11am. The two hours of queuing passed fairly quickly thanks to some morning coffees, snacks, and a year's worth of catch up chat. In the first photo you'll notice that we got given a queue card - they take their queuing very seriously in England (lol). It was a nice day out and quite a novelty to be somewhere that I had only ever seen on television. We managed to spot Novak Djokovic on the grounds, and even made it to centre court to see the Andy Murray match (thanks to MORE queuing at the ticket resale point). But the definite highlight of my day was something that happened while we were queuing for resale tickets. Brace yourselves, because... I SAW NOEL FIELDING AND HE WAS WEARING GOLD SHOES AND IT WAS AMAZING. If you don't know who Noel Fielding is, google The Mighty Boosh and educate yourselves. Then we can talk.

If you don't know, he is the one in the tartan jacket. I'm kind of bummed I didn't get photos of his gold shoes. They were Amazing.

Mixing up the travel posts with a bit of an outfit post. Rememeber that Charles Anastase dress that I fell head over heels for? The one that retailed for a smidge over $1000? Well, before I left on my travels I attempted making my own version of that dress. I found an old pattern in my mum's stockpile of sewing stuff, bought some purple material, and set off trying to make my own. It all went a bit awry when my mum insisted that I stop following the instructions and do it her way. After a bit of a mother/daughter disagreement, I let up and agreed to do it her way. This is only a sneak peek as I still intend to make a few adjustments to it. I wore this on Sunday on a mother/daughter date to the bayside and for a bit of a market trawl. I brought my camera but had left my memory card in the reader at home. So there are no photos from that day. Rookie error, I know.

It's fairly safe to say that I love London. Dreary weather and all. It had won me over within the first couple of hours I was there. These are a few photos taken during my first official sightseeing day. Armed with my new-found knowledge of the tube (which didn't help much because my district line was down for the weekend), I headed to the city to check out the big London sights - Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, The London Eye, Westminster Abbey... the list goes on and on. The first stop was Buckingham Palace for the changing of the guards. Being a Sunday and during the summer holidays meant that there was a massive crowd for the event. The previous day I had attended the Royal Ascot Races, where I managed to see the Queen (I didn't take any photos - whoops). Unfortunately she wasn't at Buckingham Palace when I visited (you can tell by what flag they're flying). Seeing as Ol' Lizzie wasn't home to invite me in for tea and scones, I wandered up to Piccadilly Circus and walked around and just took everything in. Wandering around aimlessly was one of my favourite things to do on this trip. I also checked out the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery. I am a bit of a museum/gallery nerd so London and Paris were like crack to me. I had to include the photo of the gates to Green Park (last photo). Talk about opulent. As a lover of all things shiny, the amount of gilt that adorned things made my inner magpie quite happy. I also ventured across to Southbank which was quite lively. Going from Brisbane to a massive city like London is crazy. There's just so much to see and do. Which is probably why I fell head over heels for it.

Splendour in the Grass is on this weekend. And I'm not there. Boo! (Although I just did get back from an epic trip and Glastonbury and I've seen most of the bands before so I can't really complain, can I?). Seeing as I can't be in attendance at the festival this weekend, I'll post these Splendour inspired shots from Beginning Boutique instead. I was emailed these shots a few weeks ago but since I was on holidays I've only just gotten around to posting them now. I think the lookbook has instinctively captured the free-spirited nature of the Splendour in the Grass festival. What's more, they even created a special Splendour in the Grass edit on their website - a shop after my own heart!

I arrived in London at around 3.30pm on a Thursday. After being met at the arrival gates by my bestie Bron, we trekked it back to her place where I could freshen up after my long haul flight. We then raced back out the door for her tag rugby finals and so I could also meet all of her London friends. What was meant to be a few drinks after the game turned into a late night out and racing home before the last tube service. At this point, I hadn't been to sleep in god knows how long. Needless to say when I did finally stop, I crashed. The next day was fairly relaxed and spent doing things like Glastonbury planning and grocery shopping (the first thing I bought were bananas - they were averaging $15 per kilo at home, so I was extremely excited to be able to buy a whole bunch for £1.) That night we went to see Romeo & Juliet the ballet at The 02 arena (which is where these photos were taken). The arena is INSANE. A must-see if you're in London. We were in the nosebleed section, but still had a pretty good view. These photos feature the light installation in the foyer area. I'm like a moth to a flame - anything shiny or bright and I'm transfixed. I didn't take any photos of the actual performance because I think that's just poor form (here's looking at you, lady who took a photo using a flash during the second half). You can't really see my outfit in the last photo, but that's okay because it's nothing exciting and it got rained out anyway. I learned quite quickly that it pays to have an umbrella handy at all times in London.

Hello there! Long time no speak. So I'm finally back from my travels and back to blogging (that whole blogging while travelling thing never eventuated). These are a few photos from my flight over. 24 hours of travelling. Fun (not). Especially when the first eight hour flight from Brisbane to Singapore could only be classified as the worst flight ever - thanks to a whole heap of turbulence and my propensity for travel sickness. By the end of the six weeks, however, I was a seasoned traveller and my trip home was a breeze. Unfortunately I got aisle seats on both flights home so no photos from those. I've seen and done so much in the past six weeks, I didn't really know where to start. But the beginning seems to make the most sense, right?

Celine Rita. Spring Summer 2011/12. "Boulevard Baby".

I always enjoy discovering new labels. Celine Rita is an up-and-coming New Zealand label that debuted at NZ Fashion Week in 2010. The spring 2011/12 collection is entitled 'Boulevard Baby' and draws inspiration from the "sunny coastlines of America" as well as incorporating 1990s influences. With a collection that features leopard print and pastel pink sheer fabrics, how could I not want to write about it? The printed blazer and pants in the last image have especially caught my eye. For a collection that aspires to be "effortlessly cool", it's achieved just that.

Don't be fooled. I packed way more stuff. This is just the skeleton of my travel wardrobe. There's also stuff I forgot to feature like jewellery, cardigans, denim shorts, plain t-shirts, flip flops... and underwear and pyjamas and all that stuff. For the one camel-coloured singlet there's also a black one, white one, grey one... you get the picture. I initially packed six striped shirts. I whittled it down to four. After reviewing the contents for what seemed like the hundredth time, I also got rid of the pink dress and yellow skirt. I'm taking the black bag on the plane with me, and my jeans and striped shirt are stored in my day pack as a spare set of clothes. Anyway, you'll most likely see the majority of the clothes I ended up packing in all my travel photos. Not long till I head off now! I've managed to wrangle together a few scheduled posts. Say hello to my new pink travel wallet. It's near impossible for me to step into Typo without purchasing something. When I spied this I knew I had to have it for my impending trip. I was tossing up between pink and mint green, but my gut told me to with pink. I'm going to start packing tomorrow, so I'll sort out a packing post while I'm at it. Remember to keep the London/Glastonbury/Paris/Europe/travel-tips-in-general flowing. One thing I'd love to know is where to purchase and get film developed in London on the cheap. Any suggestions?

little green book of travels & tales

Hopefully in two months time this little book will be jam packed with hundreds of tales about my travels. If you've been following me on twitter, you may be aware that I've been in a travelling frame of mind lately. Because this time next week I will be in London! And the week after that I'll be having a grand old time at Glastonbury. To help me get organised I'm going to ask all you lovely readers (because I know there are a fair few of you in the UK and Europe in general) to give me your best London/Glastonbury/travel tips. I'll also be spending a week in Paris and an extra week or two gallivanting (read: no set plans yet) in Europe. So the more advice, the better! Tell me your favourite things to do, places to visit, and where to eat/drink/shop/people watch. Recommendations on where I can get a decent cup of coffee won't go astray either. I'll be travelling sans laptop so posting might be a bit erratic over the next six weeks. I'll look into setting up some scheduled posts, and will try and do a quick post every now and then while I'm over there. Rest assured I'll have plenty to blog about when I get back. In the meantime, you can look forward to my packing* posts!

beginning boutique: snakes and lattes

Oh, what's this? A blog post? But Soph, I thought you had fallen off the face of the earth? A week is a long time in blog land, I know. I wanted to post these photos last week but ended up without internet for a couple of days. And we all know that lack of internet is not conducive to blogging. These images are part of Beginning Boutique's Winter 2011 campaign. For those Brisbane readers out there you may notice that the location of the shoot is the Flamingo Cafe! For those not familiar, the Flamingo Cafe is a hole-in-the-wall joint tucked away in a laneway in Fortitude Valley. It's complete with striped awning, astro-turf, and retro furniture. It's perfect for grabbing a quick bite to eat or catching up with friends over coffee. The team at Beginning Boutique definitely have a knack for producing quirky lookbooks (case in point: their Second Summer lookbook). The winter campaign promises to feature not only favourable fashion, but also some of Brisbane's favourite locations. These images are from Volume 1 of the June lookbook so I can't wait to see what's in store for Volumes 2, 3, etc.

Another season and another charming collection from twenty-seven names. These are just a few of my favourite looks from the spring/summer 2011/12 lookbook. Everything about this collection exudes wearability. The loose-fitting chiffon pieces are perfect for the summer months and the cuffed chinos are an exercise in utilitarian cool. The heart print fabric keeps it all playful and adds a dash of girlish charm that is so synonymous with the twenty-seven names aesthetic. Thank goodness that this spring/summer collection won't drop for a few months yet - it'll give me enough time to save up for one of those heart print dresses! I might give the socks and sandals a miss though - that's just a bit too high school sport for my liking.

I probably wear this sweater a bit too much. But it's just so comfortable! These shorts used to be my mum's. They were originally a weird knee length but I decided to make them shorter. The boots I bought from Asos ages ago. The reason for the flat outfit layout is due to my tripod breaking. It hasn't been a good few days for camera equipment around these parts. My camera is falling apart too, kind of - a bit of rubber casing has come unstuck. It's all superficial, and the camera is still fully functional, but it's just really annoying. Also, a big thank you to everyone who voted for me in the Splendour in the Grass photo competition. Unfortunately I didn't make the cut (nudged out in the dying minutes) but we still fought a good fight. I wouldn't have been able to make it anywhere near the top 5 if it wasn't for all the blog support!

I've been waiting for this Secret Squirrel top to arrive for a while now. I ordered it late on a Tuesday night, only to be told at the check out that they ship orders on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Express shipping doesn't really feel like express shipping when you have to wait two days for it ship and there's a weekend in the way of delivery times. Anyway, this shirt has an oversized fit and nifty zippers at the sides. It's an ideal slouchy shirt. I think it's going to be getting a lot of wear this winter. Alternate alternate title: what's the point of having a blog if I can't use it for a little self promotion?

Because this year's ticket prices are ludicrous, and I will be poor from my travels overseas, this year I will not be attending Splendour in the Grass a.k.a. my festival nirvana. However, all is not lost as I have decided to try my luck in their PIC ME! competition. All that was required was for contestants to submit photographs from past Splendours. The prize is a double event camping pass to this year's festival *jaw drop*. If you cast your memories back to August last year you may recall my colourful documentation of three days of festival shenanigans. So I submitted a few photos and am now vying for votes. Your votes, to be precise.

What's in it for you, you ask? Well... tangibly... nothing. You'll be voting out of the kindness of your hearts and with the knowledge that you're helping one girl's dream of seeing Kanye and Pulp in the flesh come true. And for that you'll have my deepest gratitude. If I do win (unlikely but one can always dream), you'll also get to live vicariously through my Splendour adventures. My latest hit? These Akubra for bec & bridge fedoras. They featured prominently on the label's recent RAFW runway show and are available for pre-order on the bec & bridge e-boutique. However at $245 a pop these hats will forever be on my lust list and never on my head.

Meet my chartreuse dress. I picked it up at a Salvos store a while ago now. I first noticed it on the "Retro" rack that the store had put up (obviously getting savvy to the whole "vintage" thing). For some reason or another I never ended up buying it. Then I see this 'Luxe Utility' dress from Shakuhachi (it's doesn't seem to be available on their online store anymore). Cue the holy-crap-I-should-have-bought-that-dress-from-Salvos thoughts. Anyway, I went back a few weeks later hoping, praying that the dress would still be there. The Retro rack was gone. I was disheartened. Then as I was rifling through the racks I came across a sliver of chartreuse material. Behold! It was the dress. They had simply dismantled the Retro rack and placed everything back to normal. $18 thrifted dress vs. $200ish Shakuhachi dress... and the winner is?

Pastels!

It'll be interesting to see what Jaharn and I come up with for this particular challenge. Hopefully this theme will be much kinder to me than the last one (pleats). It definitely became a case of once you start looking for something you can't find it ANYWHERE. You may already have noticed that I love a bit of pastel action, but this was purely a coincidence, I swear! I was secretly gunning for leather. Shhh. Anyway, it's sunshiney outside so I am off to the beach soon. In Autumn? YES. Although I might skip on the swimming bit. Even if it is all blue skies and sun, the water is still probably freezing cold. Hope everyone has an excellent weekend!

So the weather is cooling down and the mornings and evenings are getting chilly, but I still refuse to wear tights. I'm too busy grasping at whatever warm weather we have left (which, when it reaches about 10am, is quite a lot actually). I'm also grasping at getting as much wear out of this skirt as I can before it inevitably falls to pieces. It's starting to look a bit worse for wear. Sad face. What AREN'T looking worse for wear are these Ash ankle boots that I scored from my-wardrobe.com. Happy face. I still like to wear them with nearly everything. Usually I find it hard to pair midi length skirts with ankle boots for fear of making my legs look stumpy, but these boots are perfect. I think it has to do with the dippy bit at the front. Yes, dippy bit. Check out my grasp of the English language yo.

I bought these pants over the weekend at Salvos for $2.50. They have an elastic waistband (slightly daggy) and NO POCKETS (say whaaaaat) but the fact that they are an ideal salmon/blush/pastel pink colour more than makes up for it. And did I mention they were only $2.50? Win.

Gorman. Winter 2011.

I don't know where to start with this collection. I love it all. ALL. From the colour palette to the busy patterns, Gorman's winter 2011 collection is chock full of what I want to be wearing right now. If Claudia from The Babysitter's Club grew up to become a fashion designer (and was, more importantly, a real person) then this collection would have her name written all over it.
